An educational intervener is a 1:1 paraeducator who has received specialized training in intervention for students with combined vision and hearing issues and is an important related service as their specialized knowledge and skills enable them to effectively meet the unique and complex learning needs of these students.
California Deafblind Services provides online training to current interveners and paraeducators interested in this role through a partnership with the College of Professional and Global Education at San Francisco State University. Intervener candidates who complete two-semesters of asynchronous online coursework in intervention in deafblindness will earn a CSU Intervener Certificate, demonstrating they hold the knowledge and skills to serve in the role of an intervener. This online program uses content from the rich and rigorous deafblind training modules developed by the National Center on Deafblindness and CDBS staff members serve as the online instructors of the course. The cost for two courses over two semesters (Fall 2026 and Spring 2027) will be $480 ($240 per course)--a reasonable price for this amount and level of professional development. This program is only open to those in or considering paraeducator positions.
Registration for Course 1 is now open until August 23rd. The asynchronous course begins August 24th.
