June’s here and so is summer break! The good news is if you need support, resources, or would like to set up training for next fall the CDBS staff will be available all summer. This monthly newsletter includes some upcoming virtual family events, opportunities for professional development, and ideas for fun summer activities for children and youth who are deafblind.

We’ll be celebrating Deafblind Awareness Week from June 25–July 1 with the National Center on Deafblindness and Deafblind Projects from across the country. Stay tuned to our Instagram and Facebook wall that week for information, stories and resources.

CDBS Interest Survey: Summer and Fall PD Opportunities

We’re planning a free virtual Professional Development series on Preparing for and Instructing Students Who Are Deafblind to be held in either August or October. We’re seeking information about interest in summer learning opportunities for educators who support (or may support) learners who are deafblind. Please help us gather feedback by completing the short survey below and sharing with other interested colleagues. We will keep you posted about whether the virtual training sessions will be offered in August or October.

Upcoming Events

Virtual Family Cafe June 9th from 6-8pm PT California parents of children who are deafblind join the CDBS staff in a conversation about your experiences related to communication with your child and other developmental issues. We’d like you to share your input as we plan for an upcoming fall webinar series. Join other parents in telling us about your questions, concerns, and successes. Spanish language interpretation will be provided.

Monthly Virtual Family Support Groups

Come join other family members and Myrna Medina at "The Family Gathering Place" to connect, learn together, and find support on your family’s journey with deafblindness.

"The Family Gathering Place" is a 60-minute virtual Zoom meeting once per month where family members connect, share experiences, ask questions, and gather practical resources.

English Language Support Group Meeting: 2nd Tuesday of the month: May 12th, and June 9th at 6pm PT
Spanish Language Support Group Meeting: 2nd Thursday of the month: May 14th, and June 11th at 6pm PT

SFSU-CDBS Online Intervener Training Program

California Deafblind Services and the SFSU College of Professional and Global Education (CPaGE) offer a two-semester online training program to prepare paraeducators to serve as educational interveners for learners who are deafblind. These courses are open to paraeducators currently serving students who are deafblind or those interested in this professional pathway. Registration for our next cohort opens in July 2026. The first course starts in late August.
